Divergence
Most of the stories in this book are about human relationships and the complexities—indeed, the mystery—of intimacy. It’s hard enough, many times, to describe accurately how one feels in any moment. It’s harder yet to know how another feels, for the hooks of emotion come from deep inside us, often from places as mysterious as our dreams. Fictional stories such as these, written by a stranger in response to feelings as mysterious to the author as to the reader, might nudge you to recognize how much we humans have in common. In varying degrees, we share experiences that allow us to know one another and relate to each other in ways that add richness to our lives. The title of this book, Divergence, suggests how sometimes our internal experiences diverge from the familiar. Where they come from is part of that mystery of life, but they can enrich us in ways beyond those we think of as ordinary.
