I Nearly Married a Human (Surviving Life's Turbulence)

Steve Rhodes

An entertaining, simple and unique book on how to survive life's every day ups-and-downs. I nearly married a human looks at how just being alive shapes and influences who we become as we go through life. The author makes no claims to be an 'expert,' nor does he guarantee that by just reading a book you will magically transform your life. What he does do is state clearly and honestly, where and how you likely got lost in the first place. Using examples from his own life, he then suggests some ideas to get back on track. What I particularly liked however, is that he makes no bones about the fact that we are going to have to take full responsibility in doing so. Steve gives no place to hide when he speaks about how blame culture is becoming too big of a crutch to lean on. The tone of the book is brutally honest. The author owns his imperfections throughout, but always talks about the learning that he tries to take from situations and relationships. As a follow-up to Faith. Something I can't feel, it allows the reader to see more of the authors insecurities, but also more of his innate wisdom. If I am truthful, it also made Steve feel almost a part of the family. With no exercises, mantras, meditations or letters to imagined loved-ones, he delivers a simple, no-nonsense approach to what you can do to help yourself get un-stuck. He lays out some of the types of therapies available, and talks about the necessary boundaries that should exist, for the process to be successful. He debunks some of the myths around 'talking therapies' and even suggests possible reasons why so many people feel therapy wasn't (or wouldn't be) right for them. and therefore end up avoiding it. Written from the perspective of a mere mortal, who sure sounds like he has had more than his fair share of struggles, just staying sane and upright throughout his life. A life that informs the book fully, and is entertaining and refreshing in its openness. I nearly married a human is a true tonic in a jaded world. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs some help finding their way. I may even buy myself a copy, and a few spare one for friends when, or if they ever need support.
