Echoes in the Thicket follows Carol Anne Etchison, a young American woman who has been haunted since childhood by vivid, terrifying visions of running through a dark Scottish forest, pursued by soldiers, and violently dying. These aren't mere nightmares-they're the memories of Isobel MacKenzie, a young Highland woman who was killed by English soldiers in 1746, shortly after the Battle of Culloden. As Carol Anne grows from a frightened five-year-old into a determined young woman, she becomes obsessed with uncovering the truth behind these visions, spending years researching Scottish history, tracking down family genealogies, and piecing together fragments of a story that history tried to erase.

Driven by an inexplicable bond that transcends time and death, Carol Anne eventually travels to Scotland to find the places where Isobel lived and died. Through her investigation, she discovers Isobel's hidden journal, visits the ruined MacKenzie estate, and ultimately confronts the full horror of what happened in that forest clearing over two centuries ago.
