The Queens Gambit Declined: Albin Counter-Gambit: A Visual Guide
The Albin Counter-Gambit was named after Adolf Albin, a Romanian chess player, who popularized this aggressive response in the late 19th century. The idea behind this gambit is to counter the Queen's Gambit (1.d4 d5 2.c4) by immediately challenging white's central pawn on d4 with the move 2. ...e5. By sacrificing a pawn, black aims to undermine white's pawn structure and open up the position for piece activity. After white accepts the gambit with 3.dxe5 black will push the other pawn to 3. ...d4, where black aims to control the center and gain a lead in development. The Albin Counter-Gambit is a highly tactical opening that can lead to sharp positions with imbalances in material and pawn structure. It requires accurate play from both sides, as one misstep can result in significant advantages for the opponent. It is not as commonly played at the highest levels of chess due to its risks, but it can be a surprise weapon at lower levels or in rapid and blitz games where the time pressure may favor the attacking side. This visual guide gives you a diagram for every step, so no need for a chess board to read the book. The book not only contains the main line and important side-lines such as the Alapin variation, Fianchetto variation and Lasker Trap, but also covers some more rare lines and the basics of the main “Albin Counter- Gambit declined” lines. At the back is a schematic overview of all the lines and some exercises to practice what you have learned. About the author Sander R. Smit is a Dutch chess enthusiast and chess author.
