4x4 Driving Tips, Tricks & Techniqques

Don Alexander, Wendy Stephens, and Bill Stephens

Owning a 4x4 vehicle opens the door to adventures, driving challenges, exceptional beauty and a relaxing environment free from the everyday crowds an worries. Unfortunately, the majority of new 4x4 ochers never reach the trails even when they are in the backyard as they are in our area of Big Bear Lake, CA. In a USDA Forest Service survey several years ago, over 90% of local Big Bear area residents have never been more than a half mile off the pavement. When the survey was conducted the roads and trails were in much better condition than today. Any vehicle, 4 wheel drive or otherwise, could negoitate most of the trails in dry conditions. It’s sad that most people have no idea what is available to them locally, or that they are fearful of getting lost or stuck in the backcountry. Today, a plethora of resources are available to locate opportunities, navigate safely to beautiful locations and reach out for help if necessary. It’s easy to find groups that welcome newcomers and veterans alike on trail drives. Just look on Facebook and Instagram or search the web for local 4x4 clubs. The current (2024) models of Jeep Wranglers and Ford Broncos offer navigation systems and trail resource guides right on the infotainment system. And with expanded cell coverage, very places are in dead spots. As always it is advised to travel in groups or at least tell someone where you are going and when you are expected to return. Safety first! Driving off road presents many challenges. Most significant is the reality that many situations require a counter-intuitive response to avoid a serious situation. The necessary skills require insight, knowledge and practice to assure the correct response takes place when encountering dicey situations. The opportunities presented by 1000’s of miles of off road trails comes with serious responsibilities. Taking care of the environment , keeping trails pristine and leaving no trace require insight and a high degree of integrity. Those who do not adhere to the principles of TREAD LIGHTLY cause trails to be closed and access for motorized vehicles to be curtailed. Being responsible by staying on designated routs and cleaning up after yourself (and even cleaning up after those lacking is responsibility) helps keep trails accessible and pristine. It is important to do your part.
