Dagonism A Post-Mortem on the Earth
On my books that deal with religion, as this one does, I issue a warning. Some are not suitable for committed Christians, some are not suitable for believing Muslims, and some are not suitable for Orthodox Jews. This book is not suitable for all three of the above. It begins like this. It used to be that the only person who walked around with a sign on his back saying "The End Is Nigh" was some scruffy vagabond with a few screws loose in his head. Now that sign is most likely to be found being carried by a scientist. We have one Camilo Mora, a biologist from the University of Hawaii, predicting that within this century all the major western cities will be unliveable as the earth heats to a boiling point and that Alaska will be the new Florida. Then there is Stephen Hawking, the physicist, making headlines saying that the Higgs-Boson particle could destroy the universe. You have to read several paragraphs into the story until you find that he qualifies this by adding that you would need a particle accelerator the size of the earth to make this happen and no one is going to build one. Those of us who lived through the Cold War can remember when Apocalypse Now was a clear and present danger. Two superpower enemies sponsoring rival political systems armed to the teeth with nukes stood only one push on the button from ending it all. You knew where the crises -- Korea, Hungary, Cuba, Taiwan, Vietnam, Czechoslovakia, Afghanistan - began, but you were never entirely sure where they might end. The threat level has receded and it would take serious proliferation with nukes ending up in the hands of several countries or well-organized terrorist groups to jack it back up. Or the unforeseen could happen; all true catastrophes are unforeseen or they would have been prevented. I'm neither a scruffy vagabond nor a learned scientist but in this book I'm going to treat a subject I've mentioned in other books. We have in the Tanakh, known by others as the Old Testament, a prophecy that the Supreme Being intends to destroy this planet. It goes under the authorship of Zephaniah, his lead item. But this is the work of his collaborator, Huldah.
