Tales From Shakespeare
A new, beautifully laid-out edition of Charles & Mary Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare -- the highly influential and still highly popular children's book, intended to retell the stories of Shakespeare's most beloved plays in a way that is age appropriate for children but retains as much Shakespearean language as possible. Included in this collection are retellings of Shakespeare's most important works, including: The Tempest, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Winter's Tale, Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It, Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Merchant of Venice, Cymbeline, King Lear, Macbeth, All's Well That Ends Well, The Taming of the Shrew, The Comedy of Errors, Measure for Measure, Twelfth Night, Timon of Athens, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Othello, and Pericles, Prince of Tyre. The Lambs' work was among the most important efforts to popularize Shakespeare's works for a juvenile fiction audience, and it has remained in print ever since.
Charles Lamb (1775 – 1834) was an English essayist and poet, best known for his Essays of Elia and for the children's book Tales from Shakespeare, co-authored with his sister, Mary Lamb (1764–1847). Lamb was a central figure in 19th century English literary life, counting Coleridge, Southey, Wordsworth, Hazlitt and other prominent poets as his personal friends, and his work still attracts scholarly interest.
Mary Ann Lamb (1764 – 1847) was an English write, best known for her collaboration with her brother Charles on the collection Tales from Shakespeare.
