Pallas A. is a worker android living on a hellish planet in a mysterious acitya a a city that never needs improvement, redesign or expansion. His only purpose in life, along with that of his fellow androids, is to maintain the cityas infrastructure and to preserve the status quo. T.C. Smith is a human space engineer with a rogue past and an important mission in his future. Banished to the outer reaches of the solar system to manage a minor construction project, T.C. gets a second chance when he is chosen to oversee the completion of the most ambitious space-engineering project in human history. These two characters live two very different lives. When their paths cross, as destiny dictates, the survival of the androids, the future of the human race and the answer to the evolutionary question, which life form is better suited to rule the galaxy, hang in the balance.
