Maa
Mother is a timeless novel by Russian novelist Maxim Gorky, first published in 1906. Written in Russian, the novel has been translated into many languages ??around the world over the past century. The novel is set against the backdrop of the revolutionary labor movement, and the two main characters are Pavel and his mother. In the novel, Gorky depicts the life of a woman who works hard in a Russian factory and struggles with poverty and hunger, among other hardships. Pelageya Nilovna Vlasova is the main character; her husband, a heavy drinker, physically abuses her and leaves her with the sole responsibility of raising their son Pavel Vlasov, but dies unexpectedly. Pavel begins to imitate his father significantly, but suddenly becomes involved in revolutionary activities. After giving up drinking, Pavel begins to bring books and friends to her home. Being illiterate and lacking any political interests, Nilovna is initially wary of Pavel's new activities. Later, Nilovna wants to help her son. Pavel is shown as the main revolutionary character; other revolutionary characters in the novel are Vlasov's friend, the anarchist peasant agitator Rybin, and the Ukrainian Andrei Nakhodka, who expresses the idea of ??socialist internationalism. Inspired by maternal feelings, Nilovna overcomes her ignorance to engage in political revolution despite being illiterate. In 1905, after the defeat of the First Russian Revolution, Gorky tried to awaken the consciousness of the proletarian movement by conveying the political agenda to the readers through his novel. He was trying to awaken the consciousness among the revolutionaries to fight against the defeatist mood. The novel was translated into Bengali by Pushpamayi Basu.
