A Sunflower for the Eastern Front: 1941-1943
In 1941 Germany had taken their war to Russia. The Eastern Front was alive with battle after battle tearing across the countryside, and all the while as the headlines droned on, the genocide continued. Concentration camps expanded; new ghettoes kept popping up. People were disappearing by the thousands, and murders weren’t only brazen, but brutal and commonplace. Death was becoming a desensitizing phenomenon. The world as Europe knew it, was no more. Past horrors carried in the hearts of veterans of the Great War were now materializing in more terrifying realities for their children. It gave hope to the underground in Warsaw, that so much bloodshed could not be allowed to go unpunished. But one failed uprising after another began to weigh down even the most fanatic of hearts. The Savchenko family was struggling to stay afloat amongst the chaos of it all. Death camps were stealing neighbors and entire streets worth of people. The Stasi was relentless, and their hate insatiable. Could no humanitarian law vilify their blood lust?
