The year is 1969. Rose Endel has thrown herself into quiet village life in Midstreet Marsh in Kent. But when there are a number of sudden deaths, tongues start to wag. Rose is unwilling to give credence to the gossip--until it becomes personal. Her old friend David Lofthouse returns from the States, hoping to persuade her to recondsider her refusal to marry him, but instead finds himself the subject of a near-fatal attack.
